Holika Dahan 2024: Triumph of Good Over Evil & Kickstart of Festivities

Holika Dahan also known as Choti Holi or Holika Deepak is a popular ritual celebration that forms the preamble to the grand spring festival of colors, Holi in India. Commemorated on the full moon evening (Purnima) in the month of Phalgun, it will be observed on March 24, 2024, though regional celebrations vary as per lunar calendars.

The event centers around the symbolic burning of Holika effigies built with all evil incarnations inside it. The legend behind Holi signifies ‘Holika’, as the devil getting destroyed in towering flames eventually emerging from Prahlad’s devotion marking the eternal win of good over wickedness. People congregate around these giant bonfires, worship them through circumambulation, and offer coconuts, flowers, and coins while rejoicing triumphantly with festive songs and dances overflowing in heavy spirit. As the fire reduces to glowing embers, they apply the ash from it on foreheads believing it wards off negativities. Read on for more on Holika Dahan celebrations.

  • People rejoice and sing celebratory folk songs dancing in joy..Loud cheer of ‘Holi-ay’ hail the burning as evil destruction bringing boons of prosperity for all in its place! They take three parikrama rounds with their offerings in plate ending by praying towards fire thanking the beloved god.

Legend Behind Holika Dahan

The premise for commemorating Holika’s death lies in mythical tales of a monster king named Hiranyakashipu who gains boon granting immortality under special circumstances slightly similar to what Ravana extorted from Lord Shiva. However, his little son Prahlad emerges an ardent Lord Vishnu devotee subsequently enraging Hiranyakashipu beyond means to demand Prahlad quit muttering god’s name or face consequences.

Upon being unable to break his steadfast faith after torture, deceit and failed murder plots, he tricks his sister Holika having shawl granting immunity into fire to kill Prahlad. Though he sits in her lap to burn, her shawl flies onto Prahlad instead saving him wholly while she gets burnt to death according to Lord’s larger plan exposing her real demonic form! ‘Holika’ thus denotes embodiment of deceit receiving punishment eventually.
